Personal Floatation devices Types
This article introduces you to different classifications of personal floatation devices by United States coast Guards depending on the safety they provide. Personal Floatation devices are classified into Type I, Type II, Type III, Type IV, Type V.
The lower the Type the more safety jacket offers, i.e Type III is better than Type IV, Type II is better than Type III and so on.
These are off shore life jackets, better for open, remote water places. These are bright in color and gets the attention easily. These are the best floaters and gets the most unconscious wearer face-up in water. One disadvantage with Type I life jackets is they are bulky. Even a Person without knowing to swim can wear this Type jackets confidently.
Type II:
These are near shore buoyant life jackets, good for calm water places. These can be worn in places where rescue in case of accident can be expected very quickly. Type II are less bulky and more comfortable than Type I life jackets.
Type III:
These are Floatation aid devices, good for inland water conditions. These are very comfortable type and usually preferred when one has to stay in life jacket for long time. These are available in many types but a user has to be more conscious and alert, preferably choosen by those who can swim.
Type IV:
These are the floating throwable devices. Can be thrown to someone drowning and are good backup floatation devices. These are strictly not for non-swimmers.
Type V:
These are special use devices and are more convenient for specific activities. They give the safety equalant to Type I, Type II or Type III as mentioned on the label.
Now that you know about the different Types of personal flotation devices you can carefully choose one depending on your need and necessity. Continuous wear prevents being caught without protection. Most accidents happen suddenly and unexpectedly.
